In Dubai a small refrigerant top-up for one unit runs AED 150-300, and a standard refill with diagnostics is AED 250-600+. The diagnostic or call-out visit before it is AED 100-200.
What should a refill cost?
The spread comes from what the technician does besides connecting a cylinder. At the low end it is a top-up with a temperature check. At the high end the system is put under pressure, the joints are tested, and the reading is recorded so the next visit has something to compare against.

Why does your AC keep needing gas?
Because it is leaking. This is the part the price lists bury and it is the only sentence in this guide that will save you real money: should not need routine refilling. Refrigerant is not fuel. A closed circuit that has lost enough charge to stop cooling has a hole somewhere, at a flare joint, a valve, or in the coil itself.
A yearly top-up is therefore an annual payment to avoid a repair. Sometimes that is a rational choice, on an old unit in a flat you are leaving next year. As a standing arrangement on a system you intend to keep, it is the expensive option.
What should happen before anyone adds gas?
- The fault is confirmed as low charge, not a dirty coil or a failed fan. Both feel like weak cooling.
- Pressures are read and written down.
- Joints and the coil are checked for leaks, and you are told where the loss is.
- You get the refrigerant type in writing. Systems here commonly run R410A, and newer ones R32.
If the answer to "where is it leaking" is a shrug, you are buying the same visit again next August.
What about older R22 units?
R22 is the older refrigerant being phased out, and the guidance is unsentimental: Repeated R22 refills on an old leaking unit may not be economical compared with repair or replacement planning. On an old leaking unit, money spent on repeated refills is money not spent on the repair, or on replacing a machine that is going to fail anyway.
Does a maintenance contract cover it?
Usually not. Reported exclusions from Dubai contracts are gas top-ups, spare parts, duct cleaning and unlimited emergency call-outs, with recharges billed at AED 200-400 on top. Some plans include a defined top-up allowance, which is worth asking about in writing, since "gas included" and "one top-up a year included" are different products at a similar price. The AMC guide covers the rest of the exclusions.
Renting?
A refrigerant leak is a defect in the system rather than a cleaning task, which puts it on the landlord's side of the default rule in Dubai law. The detail, including what your lease can change, is in who pays for AC repairs in a Dubai rental.
